Currently we offer Spanish and may add other languages in the future. If you're interested in learning a language we do not offer, please contact us.
You may walk into our door not being able to put two words together, but after 14 hours of instruction, which is 7 classes, can you believe you may talk in Spanish for up to 30 minutes? We have seen it year after year and this is why our programs are so effective.
In order to achieve conversational ability in Spanish, you simply must attend class weekly, do your light homework assignments weekly (30-60 minutes estimated time to complete the assignments) and one hour of vocabulary study each week. Provided you put the time and effort in, you will be conversing with native-speakers anywhere from 10 - 30 minutes by the end of Beginner 1! Will it be perfect? Most importantly, it will be an understandable and meaningful exchange with your native speaking conversation partner, and that is the key. The goal in our classes is conversation, conversation and more conversation!
All our classes are immersion, meaning all classroom activities will be conducted in the language you're learning. This is why our programs get you talking the talk right away. But don't worry if the thought of immersion makes you nervous! It's a very supportive atmosphere where we are experts at helping you to make the connections you need to between English and the target language, and where learning from your mistakes is a very useful way to progress!
Some of our teachers are native speakers, others are native English-speakers with near-native fluency. All of our business and adult course teachers are licensed language instructors in the State of Ohio and have lived in one or more countries where the target language is spoken. Not only are they proficient in the language, but the culture as well.
All of our teachers for the corporate and adult programs are licensed language teachers in the State of Ohio. The teachers for our children's programs are finger-printed and given background checks, in addition to being trained by a licensed SOL teacher.
We believe that it is more important to speak a grammatically correct language rather than a dialect native to a particular country. Just like the types of English spoken in different regions of the US and in other countries, languages have different dialects and accents. No one country's dialect or accent is better than another's and we teach you a variety of ways to say the same thing in different countries or regions.
- 4 beginner levels
- 4 intermediate levels
- 4 advanced levels
- 4 near-native/native levels
Please note that not all course levels are offered every term.
It depends on the term, but usually our classes are 6-18 people.
Mature middle and high school-aged students may take our adult classes so long as they meet the fluency requirements. Beginner students under the age of 12 should start with our children's classes and work their way up.
We may be able to accommodate your observation request depending on class availability. Please contact us for more information.
We provide a certificate of completion for each level and are always happy to provide additional documentation should you need it for work or tuition reimbursement reasons.
You may be eligible for 1 semester hour of graduate level credit from the Department of Professional Development at Ashland University or The University of the Pacific. You will be asked during the registration process if you'd like to receive credit, and some from SOL will follow up with you to determine your eligibility and any extra fees..
No. Any new students who are taking a class beyond Beginner 1 will be interviewed by the SOL staff to judge which level class they should take.
Gather at least 6 friends, family members, or co-workers for a class and receive your class enrollment “fee-free” one time only for the first 16 hour class series in which you participate. This is a $300 savings for you!
We do offer special group classes for 10 people or more. Please contact us to discuss the needs of your group. If you're looking for information about our corporate training programs, please click here.
We do offer translation and/or interpretation services through our strategic partnership with Accessible Translation Solutions.
We have some steps outlined for you here and our programs also align to the Ohio Department of Education Foreign Language standards for k-5 education.
